Four of their sisters were taken by consumption. The brothers convinced their remaining sister, Mary, her husband, William Koeller, and family (Ed, Roy, Emil and Irma) to come to Reardan. The little girl, Evelyn, in the photographs is a niece of Mahrts and was brought to Reardan by William and Mary. She died young in an accident.
