Thursday morning George Capps of Capps post office, shot and instantly killed Jim Whitney, a rancher, at Tamarack Canyon, Washington Territory. Capps had been cutting timber on Whitney's place, and the latter warned him off. A dispute followed, which resulted in Capps shooting Whitney through the heart. Whitney was a single man, and has relatives in Oregon. Capps gave himself up. The shooting occurred on Whitney's Ranch about five miles from Courtright.
