Summary of Games
The Reardan Indians opened their football season of 1949 by participating in the annual Merry-go-round at Davenport. The Davenport football field had been lighted for night football and the Merry-go-round was to inaugurate the lights. The Indians knocked over Lind by gaining a 78-49 yardage advantage in one quarter. Reardan then met Wilbur for first place. Wilbur won, 7-0, Reardan placing second.
Reardan then won an easy 14-0 victory over West Valley's B squad on September 21, and on September 30, the Indians played at Lind in the first conference game of the season. Lind took the lead in the second quarter by driving across a lone tally. The Indians stopped the try for the extra point. Late in the fourth quarter, Reardan started a drive that finished in a smashing touchdown. The ball was driven over for the extra point and Reardan won, 7-6.
The following week, Reardan traveled to Wilbur. The Indians pushed the Redskins all over the field and drove the ball down to the goal on two occasions but could not get to scoring territory. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Reardan Indians looked like a championship team on October 6 in playing host to the Odessa eleven. It was the first home game of the season. The Indians passed and ran the ball to lead, 20-0, in the initial quarter, and with substitutions playing much of the contest, the home team went on to a 38-7 win over the Tigers from Odessa.
Everyone in the county was thinking by now that Reardan was the team to take the championship, but the boys from Ritzville had a different idea. Ritzville came to Reardan on the 21st of October with an equally good record. During the first half, it looked as though Lady Luck was against Reardan. Twice the Indians drove the ball down within the 10-yard line only to lose it on downs. Then, in the third quarter the Ritzville team went to work against a baffled and injured Reardan team to pound out a decisive 32-6 victory.
On October 28, Reardan traveled to Davenport. Still suffering from injuries and playing an improved Davenport team, Reardan lost, 24-0, in the last game of the season.
