Atlas Missile Phase Out Here in '65

The phasing out of liquid fuel Atlas missiles at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane will be conducted "some time after the beginning of fiscal year 1965," it was learned here Wednesday.

The Defense Department announced plans Tuesday to begin an over-all phasing out of Atlas and Titans throughout the Air Force July 1. However, the E Atlas models, which are the type assigned to the nine missile sites under Fairchild control, are to be retired at an. unspecified date following July.

Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara said the first 27 Atlases at Warren AFB, Wyo.; Vandenberg AFB, Calif., and Offutt AFB, Neb., will be phased out in the 1965 fiscal year.

Atlas E, as well as the Titan I missiles, will go "sometime later," he said.
