Town's Sole Legal Advisor Retires After Long Service

REARDAN, Wash., April 10.—Across the door of his old office and replacing his name are printed “Hanel and McNulty.” Until a few months ago for 44 years of continuous service William H. Padley was the sole legal adviser of it this community. Incidentally the town of Reardan has the distinction of maintaining the same population during the past half century.

Padley was born at Pinckney, Mich., in 1867 and was a graduate of the law class of 1897 of the Universily of Michigan, Since then he has kept in touch with many of his former classmates, He was married to Eugenia Gauss. Their daughter, Willine, was admitted to the bar in 1932 and practiced for 15 years, She is now a nun, Sister Mary Juliana, of the Order of St. Joseph.

Opened Office in 1910

From 1900 to 1904 and 1905 to 1910, Padley taught mathematics and science in the Reardan high school. He was Lincoln county assistant superintendent of schools three years.

In 1910 he opened a law office in Reardan. His legal practice has been general and as a sideline included insurance, Recently he sold his practice to Warden Hanel, a graduate of the Reardan schools and the son of the local druggist. A. D. Hanel, and his associate, A, C. McNulty.

Books and people have held Padley’s attention during his long and useful life. The Reardan senior class of 1953 dedicated its annual to him. When asked to give advice to young people he replied, "I don't think I have anything to say that anyone would pay any attention to." He does not need to pronounce his words his life speaks for itself, Throughout the years he has proved himself a faithful servant, a patient counselor and a trusted friend to all who know him.
