Howard J. Mattes

Howard Joseph Mattes, 82, an Inland Empire resident 63 years, died today in a Spokane hospital, where he had been confined since he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Monday.

Born in Odebolt, lowa, Mr. Mattes was a graduate of Northwest Military Academy, Highland Park, Ill, He came West in 1901 and in 1905 started a lumber yard at Reardan. Subsequently he was in the lumber business at Davenport, Edwall, and Harrington.

In 1927 he moved to Spokane. and since then had lived at. W427 Twenty-fourth.

He was a member of Manito. Presbyterian Church, Manito Masonic Lodge and the Central Lions Club.

Mr. Mattes is survived by his wife, Rose, at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Laing and Mrs. E. J, (Margaret) Crosby, and two grandsons, Howard and Edward Crosby, all of Spokane.
