Walt Hopkins

[Walt Hopkins was a meat cutter for Safeway in Davenport. William "Billy" Hopkins was a meat cutter in Reardan as was his brother Edward. I could not find any relationship between the two families.]

Walt Hopkins Killed While Nazi Prisoner

International Red Cross informed Mrs. Maxine Hopkins Friday, that her husband, Private Walt Hopkins, was "killed in action December 27 while a prisoner of the German government." Previously he had been listed as "missing in action" in the German theater of war on December 22.

In the first telegram, the war department said that, Hopkins might still be alive since a high percentage of the men reported missing were known to have been taken prisoner.

Mrs. Hopkins and son reside in Spokane, where she is employed at Baxter hospital [on the current site of Joe Albi stadium]. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Mead of Davenport and Pvt. Hopkins was butcher at the Safeway store here [Davenport] before entering the service.

[In 1940 Walt is living with is brother Ralph in Coulee City. Walt is a meat cutter and Ralph is a pipefitter, probably on the dam. In 1930 they are living with their parents Henry, running a meat market, and Kathleen. Henry born in Oregon died in 1936.]
