Girls Not Yet Expected to Carry Guns to Protect Chastity, Says Court.

“I do not believe the time has come when school girls must carry guns to protect their chastity,” said Judge Hurn yesterday as he gave jail sentences to three young men of Reardan who were found guilty in juvenile court on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of minors. Two 15-year-old girls, who had been given liquor, were found with the trio.

The young men, all over 20, who were given this harsh reprimand by Judge Hurn were Patrick Phelan, Gene Smith and J. A. Carsten, sons of Reardan farmers.

Patrick Phelan was sentenced to serve 90 days in the county jail and fined $250. He was ordered to spent an additional 75 days in jail if the fine was not paid.

Gene Smith was sentenced to serve 60 days in the county jail and fined $250. He also was ordered to serve 75 days additional in jail if he did not pay his fine. Both were allowed to furnish bond that they might harvest their grain and then return to serve their jail sentences.

J. A. Carsten was fined $300. He is farming a large tract. Judge Hurn had ordered him to spend 90 days in jail if he did not pay the fine. He paid the fine.

The three young men were arrested by Deputy Sheriffs J. 8. McCormick, J. §. Bradley and Sheriff J. A, Level of Lincoln county after it was found they were giving liquor to the girls.
