PETER CARSTENS, PIONEER, IS DEAD


Drove to Spokane From Kansas in Spring Wagon Back in ’78.


Peter Carstens, a pioneer of Spokane and Lincoln counties, who came to Washington in 1878, died this morning at the family residence, W829 Fairview avenue. He was 77. years old.

Mr. Carstens, who was born in Holstein, Germany, March 1, 1841, came to America in 1870. He farmed in the middle west until 1878, when he drove to Spokane from Kansas in a spring wagon. He homesteaded the ranch at Crescent, which is still owned by the family and which Mr. Carstens operated until he retired and moved to Spokane, 18 years ago.

Leaves Four Sons.

Besides the widow, Mr. Carstens is survived by four sons, Oscar, Henry, Ernest and Charles, all of Crescent. and a brother, Claus Carstens, of Reardan, He leaves 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren:

Mr. and Mrs. Carstens. celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 8, 1913, having been married in Germany in 1862.
