WILL BUILD ON NORTH MONROE

H. J. Mattes to Replace Frame Landmark on Broadway With Handsome Brick Structure.

The old frame property at the southwest corner of Broadway and Monroe street, occupied by a market, but for many years the site of the Lu Lu bar, a saloon, has been bought by H. J. Mattes, a lumberman of Reardan, Wash. The purchase was made from Mrs. Theresa Bertoneau of Los Angeles, Cal. for a consideration said to have been $20,000 or $25,000. The negotiations were conducted through F. P. Motie, a real estate dealer in the Hutton building.

Plans for the construction of @ business building are being considered by Mr. Mattes. The structure in mind will be two or three stories in height and of brick. The property has a length of 80 feet on Monroe street and 90 feet on Broadway. It has long ranked among the best business situations of the North Side because of its situation with reference to traffic on Broadway and Monroe and to and from the courthouse. Property owners are said to be pleased with the intention of Mr. Mattes to improve the corner, which in the growth of the city, has been left 30 to 49 years behind, architecturally,

Mrs. Bertoneau is the widow of L. Bertoneau who also owned the Echo bar at Main avenue and Wall street. He left Spokane some years ago and died in Los Angeles.
