JURY CONSIDERS JOINTIST CASES
John Pavelich Is One of Four Men Tried on Booze Count.
The jointist case against John Pavelich, Mike Komich, William Mason and Mat Kalofat was submitted to the jury for deliberation shortly before noon. The four were tried in Superior Judge R. M. Webster's court.
Attorneys Richard Nuzum and Ed Connelly argued the defense's case this morning, while Deputy Prosecutor Frank Funkhouser represented the state.
The men were arrested after liquor had been sold to police officers at N230 Washington street, according to evidence presented by the state. Police Officers George Pymm and C. Ralston testified to having purchased liquor at the establishment while they were disguised as lumberjacks. Komich and Kalofat were bartenders while Mason and Pavelich were the proprietors, the state contends.
Attorney Nuzum argued that the! place was operated by a man named Jim Carr, who he said had been licensed by the city to run the place. Pavelich and Mason were in the place as loafers, he told the jury.
Mr. Funkhouser told the jury that testimony showed that Pavelich had supplied Kalofat with liquor when his supply at the bar was exhausted. Two bottles of moonshine and a suitcase filled with empty bottles were presented as evidence.
