GIRL IN BABY CASE WEEPS
Betty King has learned to cry.
“Facing a possible charge of murder for the slaying of her day old baby, pale from the ordeal she has gone through since her detention a week ago by police, Miss King has now proved herself “like any other woman,” County Prosecutor Quackenbush said yesterday, “and has broken into tears.”
“She wept several times when I questioned her about the death of her baby. Her previous cold reserve has gone. Now she says she wants to take her medicine, and start a new life when she is given her freedom.”
Quackenbush said Miss King’s, calm when first detained “was a shield sometimes used by women when they go through a terrible ordeal.”
Quackenbush said he intended to continue his studies of the young woman's mental attitude and would delay filing formal charges until psychiatrists have thoroughly probed her mind.
“The charge,” he said, "can come any time, I expect to file it in a few days. Betty is in jail and can't run away.”
Quackenbush said Miss King has asked to be given a quick hearing, so that she can serve what penalty may be imposed upon her and “forget.”
