Tolstoy Farm Man Handed Year in Jail

A one-year jail term was imposed here Tuesday on Walter Engelbrecht, 43, who was convicted Jan. 24 of possession of marijuana.

The sentence, to be served in the Lincoln County Jail, was a condition of three years probation granted by Superior Court Judge Willard J. Roe.

Engelbrecht was among 16 persons arrested at the Tolstoy Peace Farm near Davenport last September, and among six who were granted a change of venue to Spokane for trial. Four pleaded guilty and charges against another were dismissed.

The 10 others will be tried this month in Lincoln County.

Judge Roe said the only reason he decided to grant probation, in view of Engelbrecht’s past record, was his physical condition, which includes serious heart and stomach ailments.
