He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDowell, and wrote his parents that he spent Christmas in Miami, Fla. He is a graduate of the local high school and entered the navy in June.

Seaman first class Dick McDowell stationed at Shoemaker, Calif., phoned his parents Sunday. He said he met Seaman second class Lyle Boyington. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Boyington of Deep Creek.

Dick McDowell, who is with the Navy, writes his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McDowell, that he is stationed at the large naval base Sasebo on Kyushu, about 50 miles from Hiroshima. He saw combat at Okinawa, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and Shanghai, China.

He entered the service in April, 1944, and served a year in the Pacific. He wears battle stars for the battle of Okinawa, for the Philippines and the occupation of Japan. He reports to Charleston, S. C.

He is visiting friends in New York City and on his way home will spend a few days with his sister, Mrs. Lawrence Bird at Salt Lake City. He was in the service 26 months and served in the Pacific area.
