EDWALL Dec 26--Fred Wollenberg, stationed at San Pedro, California, visited here with his father F. F. Wollenberg. Mrs. Wollenberg was enroute to California to visit Fred when they passed on the way, but he returned in time to see his mother. She also visited with her son Leroy Wollenberg and family at Fyst Dam near Fresno, California.

Ensign Fred R. Wollenberg, who is in the Navy Air Corps, spent a few days here last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Wollenberg.

Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Wollenberg were in Ritzville to attend funeral services for Mrs. Wollenberg's father, Sebastian Ott. Mr. Ott, who was 86 years old and a pioneer of the Ritzville region. He was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1895. He was one of the founders of the Ritzville flouring mills and also built the Ritzville hotel.

Edwall Boy Missing
Fred Wollenberg, a lieutenant, junior grade, in the navy flying corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Wollenberg of Edwall, is reported missing since August 5. He was a graduate of the Edwall high school and attended Washington State College and later was graduated from the navy flying school at Pensacola, Florida. He was assigned to flying duty on a navy ship when last heard from.

Fred Wollenberg Officially Missing in Action
An official announcement from Washington, D. C., Wednesday of last week reported Lieutenant (J. G.) Frederick Richard Wollenberg of Edwall is missing in action. He was a navy flyer attached to a cruiser. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Wollenberg of Edwall an graduated from high school there [in 1934]. His parents were informed two weeks previously that he was missing.
[His father, Ferdinand Wollenberg, managed the Edwall Grain Growers operations for about 16 years. His mother, Elise Ott, was a daughter of Sebastian Ott, a pioneer and founder of the Ritzville Flouring Mills and investor in the Ritzville Hotel. He is also a nephew of Jacob (and Victoria) Ott of Edwall who were parents of 10 children (all WSU graduates) and a nephew of Richard B. Ott of the Washington Supreme Court (term 1955-1967).]
[Fred flew in the first major US offensive after Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Guadalcanal in the British Solomon Islands on Aug 5, 1942. This island was considered strategic to both the allies and the Japanese in fighting a protracted battle in the Pacific. Both the US and Japan lost 600 planes in that battle, unfortunately one was piloted by Fred Wollenberg.]
