Training to be a "specialist" for Uncle Sam's fleet, Norman C. Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Nelson, Reardan, is now enrolled in the navy training school for electricians at the University of Minnesota campus here. He was linotype operator on the Davenport Time-Tribune when he enlisted.
His course include instruction in electrical theory, electrical methods in addition to advanced training in military drill and naval procedure.
Upon completion of the 16-week course, he will be eligible for a promotion to the rating of electrician's mate, third class.
Enlisting last May, Nelson received his recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Station, San Diego, California. He ultimately will be assigned to duty at sea or at some shore station.
Instructors for the bluejackets are, for the most part, regular members of the university faculty. Living quarters are in dormitories which have been converted into barracks on the college campus.

Norman Nelson, electrician's mate third class, who is with the navy reserve at Quincy, Mass., is spending his furlough with relatives in Spokane and Davenport and with his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. M. M. Nelson here. His wife, who lives at Davenport, is with him.

Electrician Third Class Norman Nelson writes his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Nelson, that he is back in Boston, Mass., and expects to be there for about four weeks. On his last trip to sea, he writes that he saw the shores of South America.

Norman Nelson, electricians mate first class, telegraphed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Nelson, that he was at Los Angeles and would arrive in Spokane on Thursday. He has been in the Pacific for 17 months and prior to his entering the service was employed at the Times-Tribune. He is a [1933] graduate of the Reardan high school.

Electricians Mate First Class Norman Nelson, who has been in the navy three years, spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Nelson. He participated in 24 major operations and wears the Asiatic, Pacific, American Defense and Philippine campaign ribbons. His wife, who lives in Spokane, accompanied him. On his return to Los Angeles where he reports, he will visit with Robert Hood in Portland, formerly of Reardan.

Electrician's Mate Norman Nelson called his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Nelson Friday night from Bremerton and said he would have his discharge on Saturday. Following a few days' visit with relatives in Bremerton, he will return to home here. He entered the service in May, 1942, and has been on the USS Boston during all his service. He has 10 battle stars on his various theater ribbons. Before entering the service, he was linotype operator at the Davenport Times-Tribune.
